LIGHTS ON PROBLEM GAMBLING: THE HIDDEN ADDICTION

LIGHTS ON PROBLEM GAMBLING: THE HIDDEN ADDICTION

Unlike other addictions, problem gamblers do not display physical signs. There are no “card marks” on the arms, no “roulette breath,” no “dice eyes,” and no saturation point. While visible symptoms are minimal, problem gamblers are often depressed, anxious, and may have suicidal thoughts. They often neglect family and friends, run up large amounts of debt, and may be involved in illegal activity in order to fund their gambling addiction. Gambling addiction is a diagnosable and treatable mental health disorder. Help and hope are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Click here to learn more!

Webinar: The Dream World of the Female Gambler

Date and Time

Fri, Nov 20, 2015 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM EST

In recent years, experts in the field of pathological gambling have made a distinction between 'action' gamblers (predominantly male) and 'escape' gamblers (predominantly female).

The primary addictive process of pathological gamblers is the repetitive pattern of escape from reality into a fantasy world. While that pattern of escape is present in all PG's, the nature of the fantasy world of male and female gamblers is substantially different in most cases.

In the Community - Sanford's “Alive After Five”

On September 11, 2014, the FCCG showed their team spirit by participating in Sanford’s monthly “Alive After Five” event.  AA5 is Central Florida’s largest recurring monthly street party with live music, local artists, food and beverage sampling in a beautiful historic town.  The theme for the month was football season, so the staff came prepared supporting their favorite teams.  It was a great turnout, and we had the opportunity to spread the word about FCCG and our services to over 400 people.

Knowing these facts, the FCCG has made efforts through the years to reach out to Latino/Hispanics to ensure that this population is properly represented in all forms of prevention programs, self-help materials, and educational information. Programs such as Las Caras del Problema de Juego, which is a series of vignettes designed to educate Latino/Hispanics about the dangers of problem gambling, or the Spanish self-help workbooks Chance for Change are just two of the components in the FCCG’s vast inventory that are designed to assist this ethnic group. A multitude of Spanish placards and brochures are available to the public as well. In addition,…
