Gam-Anon–Healing the Family

Gam-Anon is a 12 step, self help group for family, friends and loved
ones of compulsive gamblers. Often individuals come to the group feeling
alone and helpless in coping with the problem in their lives. Gam-Anon
members learn acceptance and understanding about the gambling illness,
learn how to use the program to rebuild their lives, and, in time give aid
to others who enter the program and are hurting. Like the recovery of the
gambler, this is not a quick process. It takes time to feel better, to trust
again and to live a better way of life. Although this is a difficult addiction
to overcome, many gamblers feel that with the support of a loved one in
Gam-Anon, their chances of recovery are much better. Members of Gam-
Anon can find help for themselves regardless of the gambler’s movements
toward help or involvement in Gamblers Anonymous. Gam-Anon
meetings may not be held as frequently as Gamblers Anonymous meetings,
but are held in a similar way with members sharing their experiences and hope
with others.
Gam-Anon specific topics are also discussed at the meetings. This is a vital
program to the recovery of the family and friends of the gambler. In addition
to Gam-Anon, the FCCG provides loved ones with literature including a set
of recovery workbooks called “A Chance for Change” which can guide
them through the recovery process. If you or someone you know
has a gambling problem, call 1-888-ADMIT-IT
for resources and information that can assist you.
