May 31, 2016

Consider this narrative: you are sleep deprived, over worked, and can’t seem to outrun your stress. After several days of feeling run down, you fall ill. For many of us, this happens a few times a year. We don’t take care of our basic needs, leaving the door open for sickness.

While the aforementioned example pertained to your physical health, people stand to benefit from taking steps to protect your mental and emotional health. When we are not emotionally healthy and well balanced, we open the door for addiction to move in. We all can take steps to ensure out emotional well-being.

Just so we are clear, being emotionally and mentally healthy doesn’t mean never going through bad times or experiencing emotional problems. We all go through disappointments, loss, and change. And while these are normal parts of life, they can still cause sadness, anxiety, and stress. Being emotionally healthy is a lifelong process that takes dedicated time and energy.

One of the big differences between emotionally healthy people and those who are not, is the concept of resilience. The ability to bounce back from adversity, trauma, and stress is a sign of emotional resilience. Having a clean bill of mental health centers around having good coping skills and excellent habits. One of the coping skills you can help yourself develop is maintaining a positive attitude. While different therapists call having a positive attitude different things, we will keep it simple. When something stressful or bad happens, spend the extra energy to stay positive. We get to choose our emotions, be resilient and chose to remain focused, flexible, and creative in bad times as well as good.

Focus on healthy ways to express yourself and keeping a balance between your stress and emotions. Express emotions in a healthy way. Stay ahead of your problems and take steps to remain emotionally healthy. Many problems gamblers choose to gamble when they are feeling depressed or anxious.
