6 TIPS TO SURVIVE THE HOLIDAYS

Turn on any television, radio, or simply scroll through your Facebook feed and you will be immediately inundated with holiday cheer.

And while the holiday season is undoubtedly a time for joy, for many, the holidays can be an extremely stressful time. For those struggling with addiction, the stress that surrounds this time of year can pose a major threat to recovery.

With that being said, here is your quick guide to surviving the holiday season.

BE PREPARED

Most people are aware of the potential issues that might arise within their own families.  If your family discussion leads to uncomfortable questions, practice some appropriate responses and don’t feel obligated to discuss any aspect of your recovery that you’re not comfortable talking about.

If there is something you know that could be a potential problem regarding your families’ activities during the holiday (i.e., a card game after dinner or lottery tickets being given as gifts), be sure to have a plan in place so your recovery is not threatened.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF

The holidays are the perfect time to refocus and take care of yourself. Although it’s the season of “giving,” be sure to give to yourself in a healthy way. Don’t let stressful situations derail you from continuing the positive habits crucial to your recovery (i.e., eating right, exercising, attending 12-step meetings or any other activities that are beneficial to you).

SPEND TIME GIVING BACK

The holiday season is a great time to give back to your community! Best of all, giving back doesn’t mean you have to spend money. Donate your time to a local charity or organization that needs volunteers. Helping others is shown to have a positive effect on your mental health.

LEAN ON YOUR SUPPORT SYSTEM

The holidays can be an amazing time to connect with family and loved ones— but it can also bring about a lot of stress. Be sure to lean on your support system during the holidays.

As always, should you need to talk to someone, the FCCG’s problem gambling helpline 888-ADMIT-IT is always available.  We know the holidays are tough for many, and we are here to provide help and support to anyone in need.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
