Family members and loved ones deal with the brunt of the problems when someone they know and care for is addicted to gambling. The emotional and financial damages are just as severe for the loved ones as it is for the gambler. Loved ones need just as much help as the gambler and need to recover as well. The relationship is strained, the trust is gone and the feeling of "How did I not see this coming?" is prevalent. First, it is important to realize that you are not alone and that there is help available for you as well as the gambler. The loved one needs tools to cope with this problem and needs to be a support system for the gambler to assist in rebuilding what was torn down. The loved one also needs to take steps such as taking control of the finances, holding the gambler accountable for their actions and setting parameters going foward that will help both the loved one and the gambler.
