Is There a Cure for Gambling Addiction?

May 26, 2017

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, let us take a quick dive into addiction vs physical ailments. There is a great misunderstanding in American culture surrounding mental health.

Flu season runs from October to May.  Each year, millions of people contract the flu. This year, I caught the flu twice. Both times it absolutely knocked me out! Upon my latest visit to my doctor (who began to actually know me by name), I overheard and interesting conversation in the waiting room. Two ladies were discussing alcoholism.

One of the ladies recounted her husband’s struggle with the disease and claimed him to be “cured.”

It got me thinking, is there a cure for addiction?

Well as most addictions expert would agree, like the flu, there isn’t a cure, but there are treatment options!

When it comes to addiction, there is a difference between treatment and a cure.

Mental illnesses, such as OCD or anorexia, don’t have an endpoint at which they are declared cured. At Gamblers Anonymous, members come to know that this is true of their illness as well. Instead, recovery is a life-long process.

So we ask ourselves again, is there a cure for gambling addiction?

The short answer is, no.

But as with any other addiction, steps can be taken to break the hold gambling has over your life or over the lives of your loved ones. Whether you gamble all the time and cannot stop or go on binges that spiral out of control, there is help available.

In Florida, citizens have access to free help concerning their gambling problem. The state views gambling as a public health concern and in turn invests money into programs that can assist those that are negatively impacted. Here at the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, we are lucky enough to service the citizens of Florida who are in need.
