Student Athlete Alert (Important Info for Student Athletes)

Post by Administrator » Tue May 13, 2008 9:49 pm

Why is gambling a problem for student athletes?

Student athletes are particularly at risk for a gambling problem due to their competitive nature. They are also more vulnerable to approach by people who may not have their best interests in mind, and who may be seeking to affect the outcome of a game in which the student athlete may be playing.

If you or a friend are a member of a school team sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), be sure you are aware of NCAA rules on gambling so you do not jeopardize your scholarship or the ability to play at an NCAA school now or in the future.

In the event you or someone you know is experiencing a gambling problem or is approached by a person who asks that you take part in an activity you are uncomfortable, please know there are options available. In addition to walking away and saying no, you are encouraged to report the incident to a parent or other trusted adult, such as a coach. Also, feel free to post us a message and we will respond. However, it is suggested that you call the HelpLine and speak with a specialist so we can best advise given your particular circumstances.
