The FCCG has developed a series of comprehensive problem gambling prevention and intervention programs for youth and college age students.

In an effort to address the issues presenting with youth and college students involving gambling, and to minimize the impact on the growing number of adolescents and young adults, the FCCG has developed a comprehensive Problem Gambling Prevention Program for Middle and High School Students. The Prevention Program, included on the FCCG's PTA Toolkit for Parents and Teachers, has been approved for full-scale implementation in schools statewide by the Florida Department of Education, was funded by the Florida Lottery, and endorsed by the Departments of Justice, Health, Drug Control, and Children and Families.  Further, the FCCG has developed its college campus-wide Students Against Gambling Addiction (SAGA) program.  The programs offer lesson plans for educators, as well as counselor and financial advisor guides, and furnishes materials for student-athlete coaches, peer advocates, administrators, and educators.

Moreover, the Agency prepared special programs for high school and university student athletes and coaches, that stand as the national models by the National Federation of High School Associations and the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Department of Agent, Gambling and Amateurism Activities.

As an addendum to these programs, the FCCG has created this web site for school educators, counselors, and other professionals providing instruction and additional supports to this population. The FCCG recognizes that middle, high school and college age students spend more awake hours in school than elsewhere, including home, and as such the Agency appreciates the essential role and impact that educators and counselors can have in the lives of students adversely affected by their own or someone else’s gambling behavior.

Today, middle and high school, as well as university educators, counselors, administrators, and others have an opportunity and responsibility to look for the presence of problem gambling behaviors in students. These professionals are in a position to detect or reach youth and young adults in the early stages of difficulty and to refer students to resources that can help. This web site has been created to provide essential information about problem gambling, its symptoms, impacts, and avenues for help.

SCHOOL TRAINING

In addition to supplying school educators and counseling professionals with CDs containing the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling’s complete version of its Problem Gambling Prevention Program for Middle and High School Students on its PTA Toolkit and its SAGA programs, the agency provides free training to schools in advance of curriculum implementation. Such training is provided at no cost to school districts and universities.  While the programs are designed to enable educators to conduct lesson plans without outside assistance, prevention program training sessions are an option if desired, and vary in length between two to four hours pending the institution or district’s program implementation plan.
