Professional Help

Treatment by trained professionals can aid callers in sorting out options when trying to cope with difficulties that may arise in their lives.

Within the State of Florida, there are trained and certified counselors providing supports to persons experiencing gambling related difficulties. Professional treatment differs from self-help groups in that it allows HelpLine callers the opportunity to share very personal information in a one-on-one dialogue with a trained specialist. Such treatment also provides an option of partaking as an individual, couple or participating in group counseling sessions.

The Agency's Soft Transfer Program en
ables HelpLine Specialists to schedule appointments for callers with treatment professionals while on the phone. If agreed, the Specialist will place the caller on hold and contact treatment providers on the FCCG list, based upon proximity (i.e. closest in distance) and referral type needed, given caller circumstances, to schedule the first visit.

While there
is a cost for professional treatment, some insurance companies will provide coverage. Therefore, it is important for callers to review their own policy closely to determine whether they and their loved ones are covered for such medical help. The FCCG also refers callers to treatment professionals that have agreed to furnish preliminary support to persons regardless of an ability to pay. The Agency will pay for a caller’s (gambler and/or loved one) very first visit to an FCCG referral if she or he is a Florida resident and does not have insurance or the financial means to pay for a preliminary assessment. The only requirement is for persons to call the HelpLine directly at 888-ADMIT-IT.

HOW DOES COUNSELING WORK?

  • Mental health, addiction and other health care professionals are trained to understand and treat the unique circumstances and experiences of problem gamblers and those adversely affected.

  • FCCG referred counselors undergo specialized training to assist clients in restructuring and rebuilding their finances and complications that have arisen due to such difficulties. This is an essential component since most times gamblers and loved ones present for help with significant financial issues.

WHO PAYS FOR TREATMENT?

  • Sliding scale - all FCCG referred counselors agree to provide services on a sliding scale based on a client’s circumstances.

  • Preliminary Assessment and Treatment Supports (PATS)  – In the absence of state-funded treatment, the FCCG’s PATS Program enables HelpLine callers residing in Florida to visit with a treatment professional and undergo a preliminary assessment at no cost. Associated costs are paid in full by the FCCG in instances when either insurance is not available and/or financial circumstances preclude callers from paying. This service is only accessible to callers who are Florida residents and who visit an FCCG HelpLine referral within the state.

  • Insurance – Some plans cover treatment for a gambling problem, while others furnish insurance for mental health issues, such as depression or anxiety. Counselors use a series of diagnostic codes depending upon a client’s presenting circumstances.
