Problem and compulsive gamblers and their families are often in dire straits both emotionally and financially. It is not uncommon for persons to be in a situation where paying basic household bills is a strain or even impossible. Social service organizations such as United Way, catholic charities, food pantries and even men's and women's shelters can help in these situations. Gambling problems can bring about undue hardship on families and cause persons to go without basic necessities such as food, clothing or shelter. Beyond that, electricity could be turned off, phones disconnected and even the ability to travel can be eliminated due to repossession. Social service organizations can help in these areas. These resources can direct people to places where they can receive emergency assistance to pay bills, to keep the electricity on or to local groups where they can be supplied with food for the family. They can even find shelter if eviction from the household has occurred. Although these are devastating and scary things to think about, they are common negative consequences of a gambling problem. At the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, HelpLine specialists are trained to ask about these situations in order to get people in touch with organizations that can help. It is important for people to realize that there is help available for people that are caught up in these predicaments. If you or someone you know has a problem, call 1-888-ADMIT-IT for workbooks, resources and referrals that can help.

I completely agree. Often times, people who are struggling fail to see alternatives or even assume other options exist. Although this is a difficult time for many, there are always grants (sometimes smaller than we would like) that can help people temporarily with things like utilities, basic food and other necessities.
One thing that goes a long way in our social service agency, AJFCS, is that anytime somebody calls for assistance, a comprehensive assessment is performed by a master's level social worker. What this means is that the client/caller is getting professional assistance and expert recommendations as to what would work best for their particular situation.
