Holidays, Stress and Recovery

Post by Administrator » Wed Dec 17, 2014 10:34 am

The Holiday Season is upon us. Gifts are being wrapped and placed under the tree; lights and decorations are being put up and fireplaces are being lit to keep everyone warm. This is also a dangerous time of year for those in recovery or for those who have a gambling problem.

The holidays can bring about a lot of stress as pressure mounts to buy gifts for others and the financial strain can be hard on those who may not have a lot of money. For those who have a gambling problem, they may feel compelled to wager a little bit more than usual so that they can “win” enough to buy gifts and satisfy everyone on their list. For those that are in recovery, these sometimes difficult times can bring about temptations and relapses. Going to GA meetings and counseling sessions are “musts” during these times.

The FCCG understands this and wants to offer some hints on having a safe, stress free holiday season where gambling can take a back seat to what is really important (see below).

The FCCG also wants to remind adults to not buy Lottery tickets as stocking stuffers or gifts for minors. The legal age to play the lottery is 18 years old. Keep in mind that children should not be gambling as it could cause early onset of a gambling problem.

The FCCG is here to help! If you or someone you know has a problem, call the 24-hour, bilingual, confidential 1-888-ADMIT-IT HelpLine for resources, referrals and more!

Helpful Holiday Hints from the FCCG
Spend time with family and friends and be grateful as that is the true meaning of the holidays
Take deep breaths when feeling stressed
Make your own gifts to give to others. They will appreciate something that you made more than a store bought item
Stay in touch with GA members or your counselor
Don’t isolate yourself
Watch Frosty the Snowman and Rudolph!
