Throughout the 2012/2013 fiscal year, FCCG staff responded to over 4,200 help or information contacts from individuals. This represents a 7% increase over last fiscal year. The majority of the contacts originated from Miami-Dade and Broward counties (33% combined). The top three primary problems cited were slot machines, cards and lottery. Land based casinos and convenience stores were the top two gambling locations. The average income of the gambler was $52,500 and the average debt owed due to gambling was almost $68,000. This statistic clearly shows that compulsive gamblers will wager beyond their means. The majority of gamblers work full time positions (59%) however, one in five (21%) were unemployed or on disability. More than one third (35%) of the gamblers had committed illegal acts such as fraud, larceny, and embezzlement and 23% had been subject to legal action due to their gambling. Anxiety (83%), depression (78%), family conflict (70%), and difficulty paying household bills (73%) were just a few of the negative consequences cited during the contacts. Suicidal ideations and/or attempts were prevalent in one in five of the contacts and 23% stated that substance abuse was also a problem.
