Beware the Ides of March (Madness)

Post by Administrator » Tue Mar 15, 2011 11:06 am

The March Madness tournament is comprised of several dozen of the best college basketball teams competing for the right to be crowned National Champion. This event is a big deal to basketball fans and to those people who gamble on sports. Avid fans will fill out their brackets in hopes of picking the winners. For those that gamble, this is an opportunity to wager on many games over the next few weeks. Via a bookie, an office pool or an online website, the opportunities to gamble will be seemingly endless. For some, the wagering can turn into a problem and cause serious negative effects. Sports gambling can cause a variety of long lasting impacts such as financial devastation, broken relationships, emotional problems and a loss of moral values. Another major problem that can be caused is a loss of productivity in the workplace. Individuals betting on the March Madness games will utilize company resources to gamble and cost employers millions of dollars throughout this tournament. A lot of time will be spent filling out brackets, checking scores online and making bets while shirking responsibilities at work. Most of the money wagered on the NCAA tournament is gambled illegally. The FBI estimates that 2.5 billion dollars will be wagered illegally over the course of this event making it second only to the Super Bowl. The FCCG is asking fans to respect the game and enjoy it without making a bet. If you or someone you know has a problem, call 1-888-ADMIT-IT for resources.
