Success– One Call at a Time, Volume 12, Issue 12

The following is an actual call received by the 24 hour HelpLine at the FCCG. The names have been changed to protect anonymity. Bobby won a jackpot 11 years ago at a local casino. He enjoyed the rush he felt when he played the slot machines and soon started frequenting the casino several times a week. It wasn’t long before his losses exceeded his winnings and Bobby started to chase those losses thinking he could get even. Bobby was a business owner, but his gambling problem started affecting his work and soon his business failed. Bobby’s marriage also took a devastating turn as his wife separated from him because of his gambling. Even though gambling cost him his business and his marriage, Bobby continued to gamble, thinking he could recoup his losses and make everything okay. Financially he was devastated with losses exceeding $200,000 and a debt of $60,000. Emotionally, Bobby finally hit rock bottom and he called the 888-ADMIT-IT line he had seen advertised locally in his area. Through the Florida Council, Bobby was referred to a counselor that specialized in gambling treatment and was also referred to local support groups that could help him. He called back shortly after to thank the FCCG for pointing him in the right direction. On Christmas Eve 2009, Bobby will be one year clean from gambling. If you or someone you know has a problem, call 1-888-ADMIT-IT for workbooks, resources and referrals that can help.
