On December 7, 2010, I assisted to a meeting of the Hispanic Chapter of the FALC. FALC is a Tri-County Assisted Living Coalition. This Coalition includes West Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami Dade County.

One of the presenters was Beatriz Hernandez, with the Florida’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization ( www.fmqai.com ) For your information, FMQAI is under contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

As a healthcare quality improvement organization, FMQAI works with providers in Hospitals, Physician Offices, Nursing Homes, and many other provider settings to implement projects focused on improving the care provided to over three million Medicare beneficiaries in Florida. FMQAI’s mission is to ensure the quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and economy of health care services provided to Medicare beneficiaries. FMQAI is a subsidiary of Health Services Holdings (HSH) and is funded through federal, state and private contracts.

Breatriz stated that she’s working on a pilot program. The goal is to minimize health care expenses by providing preventive services. To meet their goal, this organization is encouraging health care providers to get together to work on a multi-disciplinary basis. Consequently, this could be a good opportunity for FCCG to be part of the team.

This pilot program will start in Miami Dade county where there are 1,100 Assisted Living Facilities. According to their records, Beatriz stated that this county has the larger number of Assisted Living Facilities in the whole USA. As well, she stated that in case this program is successful, it will be enforced all over the country.

FMQAI is Florida’s Medicare Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) and the End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Network of Florida. As the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Florida and ESRD Network 7,
